6 things you didn’t know about the legendary Markus Schulz

Get to know the world famous DJ/producer, according to the man himself!

The Trance maestro is bringing his legendary open to close experience to Brisbane Feb. 24, Sydney Feb. 25, Melbourne Mar. 4, and performing a special extended set on Mar. 3 in Canberra, for a mind-blowing show.

We recently caught up with Markus Schulz and he revealed six things you may not have known about him . . .

1. He is a citizen of the world

Born in Eschwege, Germany, Markus Schulz moved around various army base locations around the country throughout his childhood, meaning that forging lasting friendships became impossible. He emigrated to the United States at the age of 13, without knowing a word of English, and first residing just outside of Boston.

His early DJ career took him to Arizona throughout the 90s, before moving to London for two years to seek personal and professional rediscovery.

Following London, he set up home in Miami, and has remained there since, but splits his time between there and Berlin, where he will stay if his gigs fall on successive weekends in Europe.

2. Music is in his blood, his father was a DJ

His biological father was also a DJ, as well as being a drummer in a band in Germany. Because of his closed childhood, he fell in love with radio at a very young age, citing music as his form of escape.

3. Markus Schulz was a break dancer

After settling in Boston as a teenager, he became a break dancer and would arrange break dance parties with his friends. This eventually led to hiring a hotel venue, where he wound up DJing the entire night, impressing the owner to the point that he was offered his first DJ job.

4. His classic alias ‘Dakota’ was named after a street in Arizona

The Dakota alias is derived from the name of the street he lived on while in Arizona.

Throughout his time in Arizona, he also met CeCe Peniston while working as a studio assistant in Phoenix, eventually collaborating with her 20 years later on ‘Make You Fall’.

5. The first record he ever bought was Zapp & Roger’s ‘More Bounce to the Ounce’

His favorite track of all time is Pet Shop Boys – ‘West End Girls’, his favorite album of all time is Pink Floyd – ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, and his favorite trance track of all time is Cass & Slide – Peception’, which he was honoured to remake alongside Justine Suissa a decade later.

6. His biggest passion outside of music is for sports, whether playing or watching.

His favorite sport is basketball, and is an avid supporter of the Miami Heat NBA team. He also follows American football and baseball closely, and has an interest in soccer particularly during the big international tournaments.

He once threw out first pitch at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, before the Phillies hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers, and played a DJ set on the field after the game.
