What are you looking forward to the most about United on Boxing Day? Do you have anything special planned for your set?
There are SO many things to look forward to for this show. Beautiful time of year, huge lineup, people to finally meet and catch up with – but I suppose for us the thing we are most excited about is that United will be our very first show outside of Western Australia. It certainly feels like the fulfillment of a dream and a culmination, of sorts, to years of hard work and determination.
What do you feel sets you apart from other trance artists?
I think one of the things we are most proud of is that we’ve always done things our own way. Following trends isn’t us. If you are after quick success in the music industry – I don’t recommend it. Haha.
But in all seriousness, we’ve always stayed true to ourselves with our music, with our message and to ourselves. The result is a project with two very happy members who are very much aligned and believe in what Illuminor is truly about.
With two people behind the decks and in the studio, do you find you influence each other?
Absolutely. We each have very different strengths, but very similar personalities. Which I think works well – as it means even though we might not always initially agree – we are always able to bring the best out from each other in the end.
How did you know that producing and DJing was something that you both wanted to do? What gave you that push and drive to want to be heard by the world?
Well for me (Mike) – it certainly wasn’t what I was working towards as a career. I wanted to be a dancer all the way through high school and even though I was DJing at parties from the age of 14 and studying as a producer and classical pianist – it didn’t occur to me the former two would synergize quite the way they have.
We’ve both, always, dreamed big though.
I think everybody has that desire to be heard by the world – of course, when you grow up, making that a reality, usually, means you need to have something worth listening to.
Since forming in 2010, we’ve certainly learnt a LOT about the industry, ourselves and the positive mark we think we can leave on the world together – and that is what drives us to be the best that we can, wherever the world takes us.
Do you think this is a good time for trance music, overall? Where do you think the evolution of trance music will fall next?
I think we are in a wonderful time for all music but electronic music is definitely leading the way. Slowly but surely, the boundaries of what separates each ‘genre’ is being broken down and we are realizing that it is, in fact, uniquely capable of uniting us (see what I did there?), regardless of our age, sex, personal preferences or creed.
And that’s important, more than ever, I think – not to get caught up in the classification of how music can be labelled or separated, but to cultivate & focus on the optimism it is capable of giving us.
What’s the New Year’s resolution of Illuminor?
We have a new track on the brink of being el’finito. It’s quite a bit different to the music we’ve made so far, but we’re pretty confident in the idea. First goal of 2015 is to get that finished and then who knows… maybe we’ll be world ambassadors for peace? Haha
