Paul van Dyk says he ‘never really wanted to become a DJ’ in new documentary

Paul van Dyk has been featured in a new documentary that tells the story behind his success as one of the world’s leading electronic dance musicians.

Speaking on Redbull TV’s ‘Visions of Greatness’ documentary, the 45-year-old Trance maestro said: “I never really wanted to become a DJ, but obviously once i played with a big sound system in a club, i knew, ok…. this is amazing, this is what i would love to do.”

The music icon has had a career spanning more than two decades with hits such as ‘For An Angel’ and ‘I Don’t Deserve You’ embedded in Trance culture, but the story of Paul van Dyk doesn’t begin in the superclubs of Ibiza or London in the 90’s. It begins in 1985, at his home in communist East Berlin that Paul van Dyk first caught the sounds of synthesised music coming over the radio waves from the West. It was among its effect, in shaping the course of 20+ years of electronic music history, the documentary reveals.

Redbull TV’s ‘Visions of Greatness’, which is now available through the Red Bull TV app, also explores Paul van Dyk’s unquenchable desire to bring people together through music.

“Growing up in East Berlin, I learned that music has the ability to bring people together from different cultural backgrounds, different citizenships, it doesn’t it matter. All that matters is actually tolerance and respect. Be tolerant of the person next to you; tolerate that they may be gay or have green hair or whatever. Accept each other for what we are and tolerate that. I believe music at the essence is exactly that,” the Trance powerhouse says.
