As Melbourne prepares for an incredible night with the legendary Signum, The Trance Project caught up with the him to talk all things trance.

With a discography that most would only dream of, a collection of ultimate trance classics, and creating one anthem after another, Signum is a name born in the golden years that has stamped its authority on trance ever since.

Aussie fans can catch the trance genius at Brown Alley tomorrow night in Melbourne, hosted by Trancegression Events.

What are you most excited about touring Australia?

“I’m most excited about the whole experience mate! Meeting new people, catching up with friends, playing sets in all these different cities, love the vibe and people over here!”

Looking back upon 2015, what have been your highlights and biggest successes?

“Meeting my girlfriend, getting back in the game with new motivation, the response to my new track BlockBuster and the remix I produced for Alex Di Stefano on Outburst Recordings. Also, the closing set I did for Luminosity this year, signing with twenty4seven management and so much more, basically this whole year has been beyond awesome!”

What’s the secret to staying in the music business for the long haul?

“Being addicted to what you love to do! Even if things are going so well, you need to have an extreme dose of self motivation, being able to improvise, adapt and overcome. And you need to surround yourself with people you can rely on, who can motivate and inspire you as well.”

Which artists inspired you when growing up and what was the first record you ever bought?

“At a young age I was mostly inspired by jazz & fusion artists, who most of you will probably have never heard of; Jeff Lorber, Larry Carlton, David Foster (I taught myself how to play the piano by listening to them). Without that foundation, my musical abillities would have formed in a completely different way.”

The first record I bought were 2 vinyl singles: Live Aid  – “Let it Be” and Jan Hammer – “Crockett’s Theme (Miami Vice)”.

What does trance mean to you?

“Trance to me is a way of living, this genre is such a big part of my life and it also guides me in everything I do. Without Trance my path of life would have taken a completely different course. I fell in love with Trance because of the melodic element. Good & beautiful melodies & brilliant atmospheres can say more than a thousand words and express any feeling there is compared to other styles of music.”

What are your top five tracks right now?

  1. Signum – BlockBuster
  2. Alex Di Stefano – I’ve got the power (Signum Signal Remake)
  3. Bryan Kearney – Prime Example
  4. Ruben Verhagen – For my Angels (Unreleased)
  5. System Nipel VS JOC – Find Your Savanah (Signum Smashup)

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened during your one of your sets?

“Haha, dancefloors being completely wiped because of a fight, firealarms going off, event closed down by Police. Completely smashed out of his face dude, who took off his shoe and wanted me to sign it, while bloody smoke was coming out of his shoe, from dancing all night, so I signed it with Armin on one side and Tiesto on the other side…hahahaha!”

Any last words to your Australian fans?

“Yes, hope you’ll have a awesome time at all the events I’ll be playing at, seriously amazing so far, and can’t wait to take you on a journey through all types of Trance!”
