There’s no stopping the driving force of John 00 Fleming aka JOOF.
For over two decades, the dedicated Trance mastermind behind some of the greatest compilation albums and mind-blowing records still shows that the JOOF spark is alive and well.
“I’ve dedicated over 20 years of my career to this genre. The key to the secret of longevity is being honest musically as it keeps you in love with what you do, and fans know this,” John told The Trance Project.
Read along, as we interview the legend about his love for Australia, Trance and his upcoming performances at Earthcore 2016 held at Pyalong, Victoria between 24-28 November and the two ‘Earthcore in the Park’ events held in Sydney on Saturday 26th November and Perth on Sunday 27th November.
How excited are you to be back for Earthcore next month and what do you love most about Australia’s scene? What can fans expect from your sets?
I adore playing in Australia and have a very, very special connection with the scene over there. I love that the fans understand what I do musically and give me freedom to take them on a magical musical journey, there’s not too many countries that allow me to do this. The fans there are really special and I know Earthcore will be the same, as it has been the previous times I’ve played there. I have something very, very special lined up this time around and not giving away my secrets!
What is it like when you look out at the crowd at that sea of people and everyone is pulsing to the music that you are playing?
I don’t really see the people, nor the amount of people, I’m fuelling off the energy from the dance floor, this in return triggers my DJ gut instance of where to take the vibe. Nothing is preplanned in my sets, I’m driven by the adrenaline from that energy and my instinct tells me where to head musically. It’s quite an intense journey for me as I’m fully focused lost in this zone, and often exhausted at the end.
What has been the most life-changing moment in your career to this day?
The past decade has been quite challenging when EDM infected the Trance genre, myself being from the more underground side of Trance often felt like swimming against the tide of commercialism. The underground side of Trance seemed to have been a forgotten part of Trance world, but Trance is too resilient and always bounces back to the passionate artists, producers, DJ’s and Trancefamilies that are part of the genre that made it great once again.
What does Trance mean to you and what’s the secret to staying in the music business for the long haul?
There’s going to be an honest cliché answer, Trance music is my life. I’ve dedicated over 20 years of my career to this genre. The key to the secret of longevity is being honest musically as it keeps you in love with what you do, and fans know this.
Any shout-outs or anything that you would like to say to your Aussie fans?
To all my JOOF fans that have supported me over the years, I’ve never known anything like this from one single country. Amazing.
