MaRLo: “Success doesn’t have to be about being the biggest touring DJ in the World”

Electronic Music Conference delivers

Asia-Pacific’s Electronic Music Conference (EMC) – a two-day series of music industry discussion panels, seminars, workshops and a week-long string of parties – took place in Sydney last week and featured the world’s biggest dance music artists including, Porter Robinson, Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke, Cedric Gervais and MaRLo.

An insightful and varied program ensured there was plenty of relevant topics to an industry which continues to see great change and plenty of challenges. EMC covered everything from meeting the Peking Duk team to exploring dance music in the Asian market and there was also the chance to hear from Porter Robinson about where the scene is headed. Delegates at this year’s conference had a lot to discover.

There were plenty of great discussions and seminars. A standout was the EMC Artist Panel, a panel discussion that put the spotlight on big name artists Will Sparks, Nina Las Vegas, Emoh Instead, Cedric Gervais, Kilter, Helena, Besenji, Laidback Luke and MaRLo, focusing on their year of continued success and how 2014 played out for them.

Australia’s MaRLo briefly spoke about success in the industry and provided great advice to delegates:

“Realise what you actually want to achieve out of your career, set up some goals that will make you happy along the way, and I’m not saying don’t set high standards but success doesn’t have to be about being the biggest touring DJ in the world because then you’re gone all the time, and you can’t have any family life and it’s very hard, so there’s always a balance to everything and remember there’s a bad side as well to every part of success.”

The trance artist also spoke about surviving low points:

“I’ve had some real lows, where my schedule is empty and no-one is interested, so it does go up and down…but when you’re at your lowest point, every time you beat that phase, you get stronger the next time and you sacrificed more and you’re less likely to give it all up because you’ve given it everything you’ve got and survived those low points.”

Further reports on the conference will be published throughout the next few weeks including our exclusive interviews with MaRLo, Andrew Rayel and Carl McDine from Trancegression Events.
