Beat Service on Australia’s trance scene and his new album

The Beat Service sound  has captured the hearts & minds of dance music lovers across the world.

It was as recently as 2011 that producer Madis Sillamo, aka Beat Service, fully burst onto the international Trance and Progressive scene. Since then he’s been serving a succession of aces on the production front with a string of unstoppable tracks and remixes which have effortlessly transcended both the underground and mainstream ends of the spectrum and transformed Beat Service into a worldwide DJ / producer phenomenon.

The Estonian dance maestro was recently on tour in Australia, and we caught up with him backstage at Genesis White in Sydney. We fired away with questions on his upcoming album, his thoughts on Australia’s trance scene and we discovered his favourite trance track of all time!

We first asked about his thought’s on Australia’s trance scene.

“Australia is one of my favourite countries to visit, Australians respond to my music very well every time I come over. There are other countries in the world where you have to be a bit more particular with what you play, but Australians are always open and I always get a great response to my tracks.”

Just minutes before going on the stage at Genesis White, we asked if he ever felt nervous playing in front of a large crowd.

“I do get nervous but it usually happens at least a month before the show, that’s when I do the whole nervous thing, get a bit stressed, thinking what’s going to happen, but now I’m here and I’m not nervous – I’m very excited!”

Beat Service shared what he loves most about our incredible country.

“I would love to say the weather, but not at this time of year. I love the weather here in summer, it’s awesome. Australia is unique, and again there’s only a few countries in the world where I get a great response…you do have competition in Canada, but I’m not sure which one wins!”

We also discovered his favourite destinations to perform these days and talked about the ‘Beat Service sound’.

“I love playing either somewhere in South America, Australia or Canada. South Americans are very passionate, I’ve played in Colombia and Argentina – these places are really wild. It’s awesome over there, their economy is not on a high level, but somehow they still manage to pay for a ticket which is quite expensive I think, and come out to party which is amazing!”

“I would describe my sound as melodic, big room and energetic! I do have an album coming out, I have tracks no one would ever expect from me. I like to cover things from one edge to another, I do very uplifting stuff, big room stuff – but most important is the melody.”

His upcoming album will be released on September 18! We found out a bit more about this new exciting project.

“When releasing singles for about 7 years or so, I felt like I needed to release an album to tell a story. When a single gets released, it really fades so fast. We’re also doing a CD version as people need something in their hands to remember me by.”

“I’m not sure about the album title just yet, I have a few titles to decide on. Making an album is a very personal thing, and I think every artist has to release an album to make their mark.”

Will there be any collaborations on the new album?

“I have a lot of collaborations with vocalists on this album, but I haven’t collaborated with other DJ’s and producers, it’s mostly me and the singers.”

We also asked how he knew that producing and DJing was something that he wanted to do, and what gave him that push to be heard by the world.

“It just happened, I didn’t have a plan, only dreams – it just happened. I was always producing late at nights after my day job, and somehow it just took its own way, and here I am – there’s no formula, I just do what I love.”

Upcoming DJ’s and producers, listen up! Beat Service has some advice for you.

“I know it sounds like a cliché, but do your own thing and don’t copy others. You can listen to other tracks and get the feel of what’s ‘hot’ at the moment, but as far as your sound goes, do your own thing and trust your inner emotions and guidance.”

We found out what trance means to Beat Service, and he shared his most favourite trance track of all time.

“Trance is all about melody and emotions. Ferry Corsten use to do the Gouryella project, and he just released another Gouryella track which I’ll play tonight, but one of the first tracks he released under Gouryella was ‘Gouryella’ – that’s my all-time favourite! I get goosebumps each time I hear it.”

We ended the interview by asking him to share some final words for all his fans in Australia.

“I thank you for your support! As I said, Australia is one of my favourite countries to play – I promise I won’t let u down, and I hope to see you all soon again, it’s really awesome to be here!”
